New Jersey Expands REAL ID Appointments as Demand Surges

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has expanded its appointment availability at licensing centers across the state, aiming to reduce wait times and increase access to REAL ID appointments. This move comes as demand for REAL ID surges ahead of federal enforcement, which began on May 7, 2025. Residents who fail to obtain a compliant identification card face a $45 TSA verification fee at airport checkpoints.

Expansion of Licensing Centers

The commission has added three new licensing centers in Hazlet, Turnersville, and Wallington, bringing the total number of recently added centers to seven. These centers join four locations added earlier in the spring, including Medford, South Brunswick, Springfield, and Trenton. The expansion is expected to reduce wait times, which have historically been longest in densely populated northern and shore areas.

The addition of new licensing centers has already shown positive results, with average wait times for appointments dropping from 75 to 40 days. Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Rosalie Johnson stated that the summer additions build on the spring expansion, aiming to reduce wait times statewide and make it more convenient for residents to get their REAL ID.

Federal Enforcement and TSA Verification Fee

Federal enforcement of REAL ID began on May 7, 2025, and since February 1, 2026, the TSA has implemented a $45 fee for travelers who reach security checkpoints without a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport. Residents who fail to obtain a compliant identification card must complete the TSA ConfirmID identity-verification process, which can be avoided by obtaining a REAL ID driver's license or non-driver ID.

Appointment Categories and Digital Document Check

The MVC offers two appointment categories: REAL ID Upgrade for current licenses that expire more than three months away, and Renewal & Upgrade for current licenses that expire within three months. Applicants must choose the category matching their license status. The agency has also introduced a digital document check, allowing residents to upload proof-of-residency documents to a mobile device before an appointment, reducing the "bounce rate" of customers rejected due to improper paperwork.

Impact on Residents

The expansion of licensing centers and introduction of digital document checks have reduced wait times and made it more convenient for residents to obtain REAL ID appointments. Governor Mikie Sherrill cited the agency's progress, stating that the MVC has processed over 350,000 REAL IDs since access expanded this year, and the number of people forced to make a second appointment has fallen by nearly half. The state now reports approximately 2.7 million residents with a REAL ID driver's license or non-driver ID.
