Tens of thousands of Americans are applying for proof of Canadian citizenship each month. This surge follows a December 2025 update to Canada's citizenship law that removed the first-generation limit on citizenship by descent.

Anyone born before December 15, 2025, who can prove a direct ancestral line to a Canadian citizen may already be a Canadian citizen. Applicants in this category do not need to take a citizenship test or swear an oath. They apply directly for a citizenship certificate, which confirms their status and grants access to a Canadian passport and all associated benefits.

Surging Demand and Growing Backlogs

Since the passage of Bill C-3, demand from American applicants has skyrocketed. A report cited by the source indicates that in January 2026, applications from U.S. Citizens outnumbered the combined total from the next nine source countries.

The processing queue has expanded rapidly. The number of people awaiting a decision on their proof of citizenship application rose from 70,400 in May 2026 to 121,800 by August 2026. This represents an increase of 51,400 people in just three months. Canadian archives have also reported overwhelming demand for ancestral documents needed to support these claims.

Reasons Behind the Application Wave

The source cites two primary reasons for the increase. First, a long history of cross-border migration has created a large pool of eligible Americans. For instance, between 1840 and 1930 alone, roughly 900,000 French Canadians migrated from Quebec to New England. Their descendants now qualify for citizenship.

Second, demand has risen as many Americans seek a backup option during Donald Trump's second presidential term. Investor citizenship applications from Americans through the firm Henley & Partners reportedly jumped by more than 75% in 2025. A spring 2025 Harris poll found almost half of all Americans, and two-thirds of Gen Z and Millennials, would like dual citizenship. About a quarter of those cited "greater security and stability" as a reason.

Practical Benefits of Canadian Citizenship

Applicants are also motivated by tangible advantages. Children of citizens can study in Canada without a study permit. Those under 30 or 35 may qualify for International Experience Canada, a program allowing them to live and work in over 35 countries, including many in Europe. Establishing residency in Canada later in life would grant access to public healthcare and social services.

The process does not affect an individual's U.S. Citizenship, as both countries permit dual nationality. It also does not automatically trigger Canadian tax obligations. Canada taxes based on residency, not citizenship. An American who obtains dual citizenship but does not move to Canada, acquire property, or start a business there would not owe Canadian income tax. Those who do become Canadian tax residents can use the U.S.-Canada tax treaty for relief from double taxation.

For many, the decision is straightforward. As the source frames it, the question for eligible Americans is not why they should apply, but "why not?"
